It’s that time again when millions of people across the country commit to their New Year’s resolutions and set best intentions for the coming year.
A brand new year is great time for both reflection and looking to the future, but unfortunately most resolutions don’t last beyond the end of January. So why not consider a resolution that’s both simple to stick to and worth making this year?
Writing a Will is one of the most important considerations you have to make as an adult, however many people put it off well into later life – recent research has revealed that 29.3 million adults in the UK are still yet to make one!
Making a Will is easier than ever so it’s surprising that such a staggering amount of people are still to write one.
Without a will, adults risk leaving the decision of who gets their estate down to the law under instancy rules, which may not be what they wanted, potentially leaving stepchildren, or unmarried partners financially vulnerable.
At Peter Robinson & Co. we often see a peak in January as people resolve to write a Will to tick off their list.
You’re ready to write a Will…
If writing a Will is on your list of things to do in 2015 then there are a few things to think about to get started.
You should begin by thinking about what you want to include in your Will. Typically this includes things like, your property & estate, any cars you own, expensive/sentimental jewellery, and the contents of your home. It should also include the location of many money you have which may be held in a bank, building society and/or shares.
Other important issues to be set out in your Will may include considerations such as:
- Who will be your executor (who will sort out your estate and carry out your wishes after your death)
- What should happen if people you want to benefit from your will, die before you do
- What will happen to your business
- What will happen to your foreign property
- What are your funeral arrangements
- Who will be the beneficiaries of your estate
If you are one of those resolving to make a Will this year, then get in touch with Peter Robinson & Co.
