When and How do I Choose a Conveyancer?

When to Contact a Conveyancer

The earlier you contact a conveyancer the better.

You will find this beneficial for two reasons:

  • It allows you to contact a number of providers until you find one you are happy with based on both cost and experience.
  • It gives you a chance to familiarise yourself with the conveyancing process and ensure you are not panicking that it won’t be completed on time.

The conveyancing process usually takes around three months but could last a lot longer if you put off finding a conveyancer.

If you’re planning on selling your home, try to appoint a conveyancer as soon as you make the decision to sell and do not wait until you find another home to buy. Conveyancing involves a lot of paperwork, so this way your conveyancer will be ready to step into action and do the maximum amount of paperwork well in advance.

If you’re buying, it is also recommended that you contact us as soon as you’ve seen a property that you’re interested in. The faster things move, the better the chances that all will go smoothly.

How to Find the Right Conveyancer

One of the best ways to choose a conveyancer is through personal recommendation. If you have a friend or family member who was happy with a conveyancer’s services, then this may be a good indication of the quality of their services.

Think about whether you would prefer to communicate with your conveyancer face to face rather than by email/over the phone. Keep in mind that if you feel more comfortable speaking to your conveyancer in person, then you may want to choose a local company.

Local conveyancers knowledge of the area is always something that could prove to be useful and of benefit to you, however, conveyancing is very widely done across the country and personal knowledge of the area is not necessarily required.

You could also consider consulting the Law Society’s regional directory for conveyancers in your area, or look online or in local newspapers for services.

Take the extra effort to find an experienced and professional provider. Unfortunately not all services are reputable and keep in mind that the cheapest quote will not always mean the best service.
